Introduction

Accomplished and famous boat racers like Mark Weber, Dave Villwock, Harold Mills, Larry Lauterbach, Terry Troxell, Nate Brown, Tom D’Eath, Mark Tate, Tom Pakradooni, Duff Daily, and Ann Fitzgerald got their start in inboard racing. Many still compete week in and week out in this exciting series. Competitors are more like family as they travel from race to race.

Inboard racing offers safe, competitive racing from coast to coast, Spring to Fall. High point winners are crowned as Champions in a lavish year-end ceremony. Our Champions are awarded gold rings such as those worn by Super Bowl victors.

Is it time for you to get off the sidelines? Is it time for you to start your racing career? So strap on a helmet and race against your idols and the legends of our sport. It is easier to get started in boat racing than you might think. Several good boats are available for less than the cost of an automobile at your local used car lot.

Who knows, you could be the next APBA Inboard Racing "Rookie of the Year"!

Inboard racing has been around long before most of us were born. Industrialist Gar Wood, bandleader Guy Lombardo, and hydroplane legend Bill Muncey were among the founding fathers of inboard racing. Throughout history, minorities and women have been tremendous boat racing competitors. In the 1950’s Sharon Minns was a winning hydroplane racers. Like current championship racer Ann Fitzgerald, she was well respected in the racing community.

The foundation of inboard racing is the use of automotive engines in hydroplane or runabout style boats. The sport is managed by the American Power Boat Association. The American Power Boat Association (APBA) is a sanctioning body like NASCAR. APBA licenses drivers, sanctions races, and provides racing, technical, and safety regulations. Inboard racing has a full-time Competition Director who is ultimately responsible for the management of the sport. An elected Inboard Commission represents over 1000 Inboard members and serves as advisors to the Director.

Now Lets Go Racing

Come to a race as the guest of the American Power Boat Association. Contact the APBA Inboard Competition Director at 443-655-1842 or email at robin.shane@verizon.net. You will be furnished complimentary pit passes. This provides you an opportunity to see the many classes of boats and talk with drivers and crews. Bring your family and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. You will soon recognize that driving is not the only form of participation in this exciting sport. Many of our members participate as race team owners, crew, referees, scorers, and rescue personnel.

Class Representatives

Inboard racing offers several classes of hydroplane and racing runabout competition. A hydroplane has sponsons that raise the bottom of the boat out of the water at high speeds. A racing runabout looks more like a boat and races without sponsons. Each class has a Class Representative. One of their duties is to help you get into hydroplane racing. Class Representatives can explain the boats and even help you locate good used equipment. Your Inboard Racing brochure describes the classes. Class Representatives are listed below. Please contact the class representative to discuss your racing plans and goals.
